About The Role 

 

We have an exciting opportunity for a senior workers compensation in-house lawyer with 5 years plus PAE to join our team in Queensland. You will drive strategic direction of common law claims. You will also provide advice on complex statutory claims including permanent impairment matters to reduce workers’ compensation liabilities, manage reputational risk and minimise the impact of workplace injury to Coles through:

 

  • Maintaining strong professional knowledge of workers’ compensation compliance and common law/lump sum settlement trends in Queensland
  • Driving and managing litigation cases, reporting progress and outcomes to internal stakeholders through legal governance reporting and litigated claims reviews
  • Effectively managing relationships within the legal panel to achieve targeted outcomes
  • Providing ad-hoc legal advice to internal stakeholders on a variety of matters.  
  • Building the capability of the claims team to effectively manage complex statutory workers’ compensation claims.

 

About you and your skills 

 

We are looking for a professional with proven experience in workers’ compensation management environment and relevant legislative frameworks. You have a strong understanding of complex litigated and injury claim investigations and management and advanced knowledge of workers’ compensation legislation and emerging industry trends. You will also need:
 

  • Degree in law is essential as is a current unrestricted legal practising certificate.
  • 5 years PAE in Queensland workers’ compensation law.
  • Extensive experience in managing common law claims. The ideal candidate will have a strong defendant insurance background and will also have experience in managing and providing advice on complex statutory claims.
  • Understanding of key self-insurer regulatory and statutory insurance obligations.
  • Experience in risk management and legal governance reporting.
  • Strong liaison, negotiation and interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
