Technical Lead - Integration Services


About the role 

Reporting to the Delivery Manager of Integration, you will be joining a fast-paced team of software engineers and operate in an agile environment. This team’s mission is to build bridges between the different tooling, infrastructure & business services that power Coles. Our brands rely on this seamless integration to serve over 21 million customers at over 2,500 outlets around Australia every day. 


As a Lead Engineer, you will use your technical experience and prowess, to ensure progress towards the agreed technical vision and architecture for enterprise services products and that those indeed address the business requirements and customer outcomes we intended to solve. You will be one of the driving forces of our architecture, design, engineering, and quality standards across the development process. You will coach, champion, and practice great engineering principles while empowering the squads you support, to uplift their capability and quality. You will create a great team culture, by role modelling the technical standards, behaviours, collaborative approach, mindset to your fellow engineers.

What you’ll be doing 


Technical Leadership 

You will act as a technical leader supporting one or more engineering squads’ technologists that will collaborate to deliver projects/products that are aligned with Cole’s business objectives 


  • You will be accountable for the technical design for the assets/products that are being built and delivered 

  • You will provide technical leadership and clear context to engineers at all levels across multiple squads within a multi-team product development stream. 

  • You will be responsible for ensuring engineering standards and best practices are being followed, promoting fast feedback, automation, and focus on value delivery while ensuring evolutionary architecture and design 

  • You will contribute to the management and tracking of technical risks and ensuring the non-functional requirements are being captured and met 

  • Drive towards the realization of the technical vision of the products/assets that are being built, ensuring alignment with the overall enterprise architecture 

  • Coach them towards the desired behaviours, shared values, and high performance (as individuals and as a team) 

  • At times, you will be expected to contribute to the squad’s work (be on the tools and “hands-on”), and collaborate with the squads 


Delivery Support 

You will support the squad’s agile delivery processes and you should have a strong involvement in “what” the squads are building. 

  • You will help translate clear business requirements into actionable items of work for the squads 

  • You will promote agile methodologies and continuous improvements while coaching and supporting the squads 

  • You will contribute to the planning, creation, and execution of delivery roadmaps that are structured based on actual business requirements, communicate and share these plans with your squads and stakeholders 

  • You will promote an environment and culture that is focused on seeking value, continuous improvement, and fast feedback 

  • Coordinate dependencies and sequence the Epics and Stories to ensure the team’s ability to consistently deliver value in small increments 

  • Own quality 

  • Promote and support the team to become autonomous in their delivery practices 

  • Capture and manage risks, assumptions, and decisions 


Technology product engineering 

You will contribute to the technical direction and aspects of the product delivery 

  • Ensure engineering standards are met 

  • Promote agile engineering practices 

  • Ensure quality standards are met 

  • Ensure cross-functional requirements are met 

  • Promote simple, clean, and evolutionary architecture 

  • Support continuous improvements initiatives, Capture technical debt 

  • Guide towards pragmatic engineering approaches, and promote team collaboration and engagement in achieving alignment 

  • Drive initiatives and contribute to the technology and engineering roadmap and strategy for the products/assets the squads are building 


Technology product operations 

You will act as a service custodian of the technology products/assets your squads will own and build 

  • “You build it, you run it” 

  • Support and management of incidents and escalations 

  • Definition and implementation of SLAs for different components and services 

  • Quick, collaborative resolution of incidents 

  • Investigate and root cause incidents and drive improvements and fixes 


Good things you’ll need  

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a proven track record of a technically leading pack of software engineers who are solving some of the hardest problems using backend server technologies. Have a strong background in cloud transformation programs, deeply understand and leverage data integration patterns, experience in building data transformation middleware solutions, be a cloud guru in any of the popular stacks (Azure, AWS, Google), and finally hands-on designing experience building & deploying to enterprise-grade cloud-enabled solutions to production which are functional, scalable, resilient and performant meeting business non-functional requirements. 


  • Extensive professional experience in leading product development teams, with a proven track record of driving successful outcomes. 

  • Recognised in previous roles as an experienced technical team leader, and a subject matter expert in technology solution design and development. 

  • Proven ability to drive complex technology solution design and development, hands-on experience building custom data integration layer on the cloud stack. 

  • Experience working and leading high-performing teams while coaching them to success using agile methodologies, good engineering principles, and continuous improvement initiatives. 

  • Experience working in complex system architectures, operations, and support structures. 

  • Experience delivering outcomes as part of a cross-functional group, using an onshore/offshore delivery model and with 3rd party vendors and integrators. 

  • Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, ECMAScript, JavaScript, Express, Sequelize, Apollo and familiarity with relational databases like Postgres, MSSQL, etc 

  • Experience building and running services using CI/CD and DevOps best practices (with preference on Azure). 

  • Experience applying fundamental design principles such as SOLID, YAGNI, KISS, DRY, driven development practices such as TDD, BDD, and DDD, as well as architecture and design patterns. 

  • Experience building solutions both in cloud-native and mixed environments across the entire technical stack. 

  • Experience with various cloud platforms such as Kubernetes, ArgoCD. 

  • Experience with JFrog, SonarQube, and Azure DevOps. 

  • Experience with Terraform IaC.
