A new, permanent opportunity for a Systems Engineer is now available at Coles.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager – Infrastructure Reliability, this role is ideal for a professional with experience in enterprise IT infrastructure, including SCCM, server management, and DevOps toolsets.
As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- supporting and enhancing our enterprise-grade
- distributed computing environment across thousands of retail locations
- You will help drive automation, improve system reliability, and support both on-premises and Azure-based infrastructure
- require to be on-call support on a rotating basis, depending on operational needs
Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to the below:
Operational Support and Strategy
- Operate within the Coles IT ecosystem, adhering to ITIL-based processes (incident, change, problem management).
- Provide timely and effective operational support, particularly for store-related incidents within SLA-defined timeframes.
- Serve as an escalation point for Level 1–3 support teams.
- Contribute to the successful execution of LCM and other project rollouts.
- Participate in DRP activities to ensure infrastructure resilience and business continuity.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline infrastructure operations.
- Mentor junior team members and provide technical guidance across the business.
- Stay current with retail technology trends and contribute to strategic improvements.
- Propose and implement enhancements to system functionality to better support business outcomes.
Systems Management and Maintenance
- Maintain expert-level knowledge of infrastructure technologies used across the business.
- Build, upgrade, and manage infrastructure components in production environments.
- Take ownership of specific technologies and share knowledge with peers.
- Deploy software, firmware, and patches using SCCM; manage SCCM infrastructure including software packaging, task sequences, and content distribution.
- Monitor system health across distributed environments to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Perform expert troubleshooting and root cause analysis for deployment and infrastructure issues.
- Rebuild and maintain physical and virtual servers, including Azure Stack HCI environments.
- Support and maintain Back Office Systems (BOS) and Point of Sale (POS) infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation to support knowledge transfer and continuity across support groups.
About you & your skills
- hands-on experience managing SCCM in a large enterprise environment.
- Solid understanding of the full Microsoft System Center suite (SCOM, SCSM, Orchestrator, DPM).
- In-depth knowledge of Windows 10/11, Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, and Azure Stack HCI.
- Hands-on experience administering and supporting Linux-based systems (e.g., RHEL, Ubuntu, CentOS), including scripting, patching and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with Active Directory, including OU structure and user/account management.
- Proven experience with software deployments, patch management, and task sequences.
- Proficient in scripting languages such as PowerShell, VBScript, and Bash or other CLI tools.
- Understanding of ITIL framework, DRP processes, and security best practices.
- Solid foundation in enterprise networking concepts including TCP/IP and DNS.
- Experience working in hybrid infrastructure environments (on-premises and cloud-based).
Commercial Skills and Formal Qualifications
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., MCSA, MCSE, AZ-104, AZ-400).
- Linux certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, LPIC-1/2) highly regarded.
- Experience in regulated industries (retail, logistics, hospitality, or healthcare).
- Familiarity with modern endpoint management tools (e.g., Intune, Azure Arc).
- Exposure to DevOps tools such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, and JFrog Artifactory.
- Practical experience with automation technologies (Terraform, Ansible, System Center Orchestrator).
