Software Engineer – Integration Services

 

About the role 

We are looking for multiple Software Engineers (at different experience levels) to join our integration team. This team’s mission is to build bridges between the different tooling, infrastructure & business services that power Coles. Our brands rely on this seamless integration to serve over 21 million customers at over 2,500 outlets around Australia every day.  

 

Reporting to the Engineering Manager of Integration, you will be joining a fast-paced team of software engineers and operate in an agile environment who are responsible for building Azure services enabling data transfers, transformations for critical divergent business systems powering Cole’s backend infrastructure. As a Software Engineer, you will use your engineering experience in the integration domain to design and implement software solutions to migrate workloads to Azure cloud and develop services to enable various Cole’s platforms. As an experienced developer, you will drive to ensure engineering and quality standards across the development process in an agile setup. You will champion, and practice great engineering principles while empowering your peers to uplift their capability and quality. You will create a great team culture, by role modelling the technical standards, behaviours, collaborative approach, mindset to your fellow engineers.

What you’ll be doing 

As the Software Engineer in this space, you will work closely with the engineering team, architects to understand existing applications, business requirements, design Azure native solutions for data flow migrations running on IBM IIB (Integration Bus), and finally build & own quality software that meets the customer requirements. Some of the daily activities involved would be as follows: 

 

  • Designing, coding, testing, and deploying new Azure ETL platform, migrate EAI data flows onto this new system. 

  • Building a robust platform for the business by building monitoring and observability, resiliency, and scalability into all our tools and systems. 

  • Build tools, frameworks & utilities for enabling automation first approach for unit, system, performance, and integration tests for all Azure based data flows. 

  • Building IaC capabilities including pipelines, app containers, sandbox runtimes, cloud components using Azure DevOps, ArgoCD, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker technologies. 

  • Champion quality software delivery from inception and design to build and deployment, in collaboration with our developer & tech leads. 

  • Following agile software development practices such as test-driven development, continuous delivery, and pair programming. 

  • Sharing responsibility for all operational aspects of the software that we build, in support of our “you build it; you run it” philosophy where dev-ops is a part of everyday life. 

  • Learning as we are constantly learning together, mentoring each other, and striving to do things better. 

 

Good things you’ll need  

Our ideal candidate will have skills in most of the following areas, whilst demonstrating both a desire and commitment to learning others. 

 

  • Experience with building highly scalable, performant, and secure headless data integrations using Node.js. 

  • Advanced programming skills in TypeScript, JavaScript, Express.js technologies. 

  • Experience with DevOps tools and techniques, particularly Azure DevOps, Terraform IaC, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, JFrog, SonarQube, and Docker. 

  • Experience building and running services using CI/CD and DevOps best practices (Azure will be a bonus). 

  • Experience with relational databases like Postgres, MSSQL. 

  • Experience on IBM integration protocols like MQ, MFTs will be a bonus. 

  • Experience applying fundamental design principles such as SOLID, YAGNI, KISS, DRY, driven development practices such as TDD, BDD, and DDD, as well as architecture and design patterns. 

  • Experience delivering outcomes as part of a cross-functional group, using onshore/offshore delivery model 

  • Experience with modern software development techniques such as test-driven development, microservice architecture, and continuous delivery. 

  • Providing technical mentoring and guidance to less experienced members of the team.  

  • Able to communicate and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders. 

  • Ability to work productively and autonomously in a fast-paced remote-first environment. 

  • Finally, someone who is friendly, approachable, and has good relationship management skills.
