About the team

 

Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. As a part of the Technology team, you get the opportunity to work through complex, challenging, meaningful problems using large data sets and new technologies to expand your skills and experience.

 

 

About the role

 

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build and maintain secure, scalable and reliable technical services that streamline financial settlement and reconciliation processes. You will enhance the quality, performance and resilience of core systems using modern engineering practices across Java, React, TypeScript, Azure, Oracle and SQL Server. You will apply AI-first thinking, using approved tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude to improve delivery speed, solution quality, automation and engineering effectiveness. We are also looking for some who can demonstrated an AI-first engineering mindset, including practical use of approved AI tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude to support coding, debugging, test creation, documentation, technical analysis and solution exploration.

 

 

Experience

 

  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional software engineering experience developing technical services, with strong specialised knowledge in Java, Spring Boot, React, TypeScript, Azure cloud technologies, Oracle and SQL Server
  • Experience delivering outcomes across multiple technical products and services, including solution design, implementation planning, development, testing, release and production support
  • Strong experience designing and building secure, scalable and maintainable applications, APIs and integration services in complex enterprise environments
  • Demonstrated ability to scope solutions, clarify requirements, assess technical options and gain support from stakeholders on the preferred solution
  • Proven experience working effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals, meet delivery timelines and provide value-adding services and solutions
  • Ability to critically review, validate and improve AI-generated outputs, ensuring all code and recommendations meet required standards for security, reliability, maintainability, performance and business fit
  • Experience identifying repetitive engineering, testing, support or documentation activities that can be improved through automation or AI-assisted workflows
  • Strong understanding of responsible AI use, including appropriate handling of sensitive data, intellectual property, security risks and the need for human accountability over technical decisions
  • Experience working in large-scale projects, complex platforms or high-traffic systems
  • Strong focus on engineering excellence, including clean code, peer review, automated testing, observability, performance optimisation and continuous improvement
  • Ability to mentor other engineers, share knowledge and uplift team practices

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Software Delivery

 

  • Drive an engineering team to develop delivery goals within agreed timelines
  • Facility Agile Scrum practices within the team, offer support to delivery managers in defining timelines and project requirements

 

 

Engineering Quality

 

  • Ensure the team is developing software quality in-line with the broader teams’ expectations
  • Facilitate and govern peer reviews and testing standards

 

 

Stakeholder Management

 

  • Working collaboratively with the Business Stakeholders, and Business Programme Managers and Implementation partners to ensure delivery success
