Our Fintech team is the heart of payments technology for Coles. We support Coles brands in connecting with customers and our focus is on delivering high quality payments services. And we’re proud of the fact that Coles is one of Australia’s largest EFT transactional processing entities.
Our Fintech function is currently going through an exciting period of transformation, innovation and growth and as part of that growth we are constantly looking at ways to evolve the payments experience and deliver maximum value to the customer through our innovative technology initiatives.
As the Senior Software Engineer, you will support Coles’ payment ecosystem to ensure seamless delivery of Coles payments capability to our customers across Australia.
About the role
As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining technical services that underpin Coles’ payment platforms. You’ll work across multiple projects and environments, contributing to both new builds and enhancements of existing systems. This includes hands-on development using Java and cloud technologies, as well as maintaining secure on-premises environments that support PCI-compliant applications.
You’ll play a key role in uplifting our CI/CD capabilities, improving deployment processes, and supporting secure file transfers through encryption/decryption key exchanges and certificate renewals. You’ll be actively involved in identifying and resolving technical debt, ensuring our systems remain robust, scalable, and aligned with business needs.
Collaboration is central to this role—you’ll work closely with architects, analysts, engineering teams, and brand partners to deliver high-quality solutions. You’ll also contribute to solution architecture, participate in peer reviews, and maintain operational documentation to support long-term sustainability and performance.
In addition to your technical responsibilities, you’ll act as a mentor and coach to fellow engineers, helping to foster a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence. Your work will directly impact the reliability and security of Coles’ digital payments ecosystem, making this a high-impact role with real business value.
This role offers the opportunity to work on high-traffic platforms and large-scale enterprise projects, where your technical leadership and problem-solving skills will directly influence the success of our Fintech services.
Demonstrated expertise in advanced Java programming is a critical requirement for this role.
About you and your skills
• Minimum of 3-5 years professional experience in developing technical services that provides deep specialised knowledge in Java and Cloud technologies.
• Delivering outcomes across multiple technical products and services, delivering to implementation requirements and contributing solution design/architecture.
• Scoping specification of solutions and the ability to garner support from others on the desired solution.
• Working effectively with cross functional teams and collaborating to achieve a common goal, meet deadlines and provide value-adding services and solutions.
• Experience in Linux platform and using Encryption/Decryption standards.
• Experience working in large scale projects and heavy-traffic platforms
• Experienced with SQL/Oracle databases
• Payment/Fintech technology experience is advantageous
• Understanding of PCI DSS highly desirable.
