Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. About the role

 

As the new Senior Manager - POS (Point of Sale) you will lead the development and execution of a multi-year strategy to modernise and optimise our POS ecosystem, including software, hardware and integration with surrounding systems. This role has been created to lead the end-to-end delivery and ongoing operation of our in-store POS system.

 

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

Strategy & Platform Evolution

 

  • Oversee platform evolution initiatives that support future store formats, omnichannel capabilities, new payment methods and personalised customer experiences at checkout.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies such as mobile POS, self-service, contactless and AI-assisted checkout solutions to shape future roadmaps.
  • Define and manage the POS product and platform roadmap in alignment with business strategy, customer experience and cost optimisation goals.
  • Drive harmonisation and integration between physical POS and eCommerce checkout experiences for a consistent, seamless experience.

 

 

Operational Leadership & Service Continuity

 

  • Own end-to-end accountability for the operational stability, performance, engineering and reliability of all POS systems across store and online formats.
  • Lead BAU operations, incident management and issue resolution processes, working closely with Store Ops, Service Management and vendors.
  • Ensure POS uptime and system integrity through proactive monitoring, change/release management and continual improvement practices.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure, Network and Security teams to ensure compliance, system resilience and secure payment handling.
  • Oversee vendor support models and SLAs to ensure responsive support, system maintenance and risk mitigation.

 

 

Program & Delivery Leadership

 

  • Lead delivery of major POS-related transformation initiatives and upgrades, from concept to deployment, across multiple store environments.
  • Ensure strong coordination between delivery squads, testing teams, store operations and business units to ensure smooth deployments.
  • Apply agile or hybrid delivery methods to iteratively deliver platform features, integrations and new capabilities.
  • Manage dependencies with surrounding technology platforms (e.g. pricing, payments, loyalty, inventory) and drive cross-functional delivery.
  • Track delivery health, risks, and resourcing, escalating as required to ensure successful implementation.

 

 

Stakeholder & People Leadership

 

  • Act as the trusted technology partner to business leaders in Stores, eCommerce and Payments, ensuring solutions meet operational and strategic needs.
  • Translate business challenges into scalable, reliable technology solutions with measurable outcomes.
  • Lead, coach and develop high-performing teams across product, engineering and support, with clear accountability and development paths.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, innovation and customer focus within the POS function.
  • Represent POS technology in enterprise-level planning forums, transformation steering committees and senior governance groups.

 

 

About you and your skills:

 

  • 5+ years’ experience in technology or platform leadership roles, with deep exposure to POS systems, retail tech or transactional platforms (Coles and/or NCR systems highly preferred).
  • Proven experience managing both strategic transformation and day-to-day operations for business-critical systems.
  • Experience leading delivery of complex multi-site system upgrades or deployments in a retail or logistics environment.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement track record across Store Operations, Digital and cross-functional Technology teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with vendor management, service level oversight and incident management in large environments.
  • Retail, grocery, convenience or omnichannel commerce experience is highly desirable.
  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline.
  • Deep technical understanding of POS systems architecture, integrations (e.g. payments, loyalty, pricing), and system interoperability.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and guide cross-functional teams.
  • Practical understanding of ITIL-based service management and BAU/incident response models.
  • Familiarity with agile delivery, release planning, and technology risk and compliance practices.
  • Knowledge of retail trends and innovations in customer checkout and in-store technology is highly valued.
