For a company as big as ours, the legal and regulatory environment is naturally complex. Because we operate across a range of legal remits, our Coles Legal team are trusted advisors to the business. With such a deep understanding of our goals and values, the Coles Legal team provide practical and commercial advice when it’s needed most. 
 

 

About the role

 

We are currently searching for a mid to senior level experienced lawyer to join our Corporate Advisory Legal team. The Corporate Advisory Legal Team provides strategic legal support to a range of central business unit functions within Coles, including advising the Coles business development (M&A), treasury and company secretary teams.  The Corporate Advisory team also supports some of Coles’ joint venture arrangements, including our Flybuys and QVC liquor joint ventures. 

You will be a senior lawyer in the Corporate Advisory Legal Team and responsible for providing legal advice and partnering with the business on a wide variety of legal work, including on strategic mergers and acquisitions. You’ll also be responsible for leading and managing more junior lawyers in the team, and have the opportunity to work alongside a motivated team of talented lawyers with a range of specialties and experience. This role would be suitable for candidates looking to come out of a mid-level private practice role and/or or candidates with previous in-house experience at a large corporate employer. Experience working on M&A transactions, either in private practice or in-house, is preferred.
 
You’ll also

•    Partner with the business and/or other lawyers regarding a wide range of legal work, including corporate acquisitions and disposals
•    Provide strategic and proactive legal guidance with minimal to moderate supervision
•    Participate in the delivery of legal services and support to functions that the Corporate Advisory Legal team supports, delegating or escalating as required
•    Engage in the development of the Coles Legal Team’s strategic objectives and alignment with Coles’ strategic objectives
•    Assist in supporting lawyers on wellbeing and professional development
 

About you and your skills

 

•    Legal qualification 
•    Current practicing certificate
•    Legal experience at a mid to senior level, either at a reputable law firm and/or in-house at a large corporate
•    Able to think strategically and provide pragmatic and commercially focused advice
•    Experience working on complex M&A transactions would be preferred
•    In-house and/or secondment experience, ideally at a large ASX listed corporate, is preferred  
•    Ability to manage a variety of stakeholders
•    Capacity to handle change in a fast-paced environment
•    Strong interpersonal and influencing skills
•    Strong client and results focus, and motivated with a can-do attitude
•    Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities
