As the way Australians shop continues to evolve, our Data and AI Team keep Coles at the forefront of modern retail. We combine data, artificial intelligence, and applied engineering to reimagine how our stores, supply chain, and digital channels operate — creating smarter, more connected, and seamless experiences for our customers and team members.

Operating as a centralised development and enablement function within Coles Technology, the team unites product, engineering, and platform capabilities to deliver the intelligence layer of the enterprise. About the role

We are currently recruiting a Senior DevOps Engineer to deliver cloud solutions on Azure leveraging automation for standardisation, repeatability, and agility.

You will also design, build, automate, secure, and optimize the end‑to‑end infrastructure and operational ecosystem that enables reliable, scalable, and efficient delivery of Data & AI workloads.

Key responsibilities:

Cloud Engineering

• Design and develop cloud-based applications.
• Manage cloud environments in accordance with company security guidelines.
• Deploy and debug cloud initiatives as needed in accordance with best practices throughout the development lifecycle

Quality Engineering

• Review modules developed by peers.
• Ensure Standards are maintained

Code Deployment

• Creating and building high quality DevOps friendly, scalable, reusable solutions and components
• Continuous Integration and Deployment

About you and your skills

• Senior DevOps / Platform Engineering professional with proven years of experience across DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Platform and Cloud Engineering, including more than 3 years supporting enterprise scale Data, Analytics, AI and Machine Learning platforms. Proven expertise designing, building, automating and operating highly available cloud native platforms, primarily within Microsoft Azure environments, supporting large scale data processing, advanced analytics, AI/ML workloads and mission critical business applications.
• Extensive hands on experience across Azure cloud infrastructure, including compute, networking, storage, identity and access management, security, governance and orchestration for modern Data & AI ecosystems. Strong capability delivering scalable and resilient platforms leveraging Azure services such as AKS, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, EventHub, Azure ML, Key Vault, VNET integration, Private Endpoints and managed identity patterns.
• Highly proficient in CI/CD and platform automation, designing and implementing enterprise grade delivery pipelines for infrastructure, applications, data and ML workloads using GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps and GitLab CI/CD. Strong focus on automation, repeatability, security integration and deployment reliability across multi environment delivery models.
• Deep expertise in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), using Terraform, Bicep, Pulumi and CloudFormation to provision, manage and version control complex cloud estates at scale. Strong understanding of modular architecture, reusable deployment patterns, policy driven governance and environment standardisation aligned to DevSecOps best practices.
• Hands on experience managing containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes, including Helm chart development, ingress management, autoscaling, workload identity, cluster optimisation, resource governance and operational support for distributed applications and data platforms.
• Strong background working with modern data and ML technologies including Databricks, Snowflake, Azure ML, Kafka, EventHub and related analytics platforms. Experienced supporting data engineering, streaming, AI/ML and analytics workloads with a focus on scalability, reliability, security and operational excellence.
• Demonstrated capability implementing enterprise observability and reliability engineering practices, including logging, monitoring, metrics, tracing and alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Elastic, Azure Monitor and Splunk. Proven ability to establish proactive operational monitoring, incident response and platform performance optimisation frameworks.
• Experience driving cloud cost optimisation and FinOps practices, including usage analysis, workload optimisation, governance controls and cost visibility using tools such as Harness, Azure Cost Management and native cloud optimisation capabilities. Strong focus on balancing scalability, operational reliability, performance and commercial efficiency across enterprise platforms.
• Experience applying DevSecOps practices, including secrets management, IAM/RBAC, policy‑as‑code, container scanning, governance controls, and secure software‑supply‑chain practices.
• Experience building reusable platform capabilities, self-service engineering patterns, and standardised deployment frameworks to improve developer experience and delivery scalability.
• Strong automation and scripting skills in Python, Bash, PowerShell, and/or Go, with experience building reusable tooling for Data & AI engineering teams.

Skills and Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in IT or a related discipline preferred
• Process oriented with strong attention to detail
• A proven track record of successfully matching technical solutions to business requirements
• Demonstrated awareness in applicable IT change and problem management processes
• Azure, Azure DevOps, Snowflake or Databrick certifications, highly preferred.
