About the team

 

Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. As a part of the Technology team, you get the opportunity to work through complex, challenging, meaningful problems using large data sets and new technologies to expand your skills and experience.

 

About the role

 

This role is critical to maintaining leadership across the Coles website technical stack and GraphQL integration. The Principal Engineer provides architectural oversight, design assurance, and technical direction across multiple squads, ensuring platform stability, scalability, and alignment with enterprise standards.

 

 

Work Experience

 

  • Seasoned software engineer with at least 10 years’ experience
  • Extensive experience with front-end web development and related tools/languages/frameworks
  • Deep understanding of architectural principles & system design
  • Experience working in large scale projects and high-traffic platforms
  • Ability to drive software engineering practices
  • Excellent analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Experience working on external systems related to front-end engineering (CDN/REST/GraphQL/Cloud etc.)
  • Experience with release and automation pipelines desirable
  • Tertiary qualifications in a technology engineering discipline such as computer science preferred
  • Practiced understanding of leadership principals
  • Ability to engage with other technical leaders to drive improvements outside of your direct influence
  • Aptitude for people management, coaching & training a must
  • Stakeholder management skills
  • Great people communicator, excellent communication skills
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple technology and business teams 

 

 

Responsibilities

 

Planning & Design

 

  • Ownership of the web tech stack
  • Guild ownership, cultivating a culture of knowledge sharing, collaboration and support
  • Engineering tooling selection and alignment
  • Definition of architecture and coding standards
  • Review and endorsements of implementation plans
  • Review of Key Decision Documents
  • Refinement and prioritisation of tech debt backlog. Driving initiatives to maintain the overall platform health

 

 

Software Delivery

 

  • Support an engineering team to develop delivery goals within agreed timelines
  • Facilitate agile scrum practices within the team, offer support to delivery managers in defining timelines and project requirements

 

 

Engineering Quality

 

  • Ensure the team is developing software quality in-line with the broader teams’ expectations
  • Facilitate and govern peer reviews and testing standards

 

 

Team Development

 

  • Empower and develop the engineering team’s skills
  • Facilitate training, ensure all engineers are meeting needs and gaining help to close gaps
