As the way Australians shop continues to evolve, our Data and AI Team keep Coles at the forefront of modern retail. We combine data, artificial intelligence, and applied engineering to reimagine how our stores, supply chain, and digital channels operate — creating smarter, more connected, and seamless experiences for our customers and team members.

 

Operating as a centralised development and enablement function within Coles Technology, the team unites product, engineering, and platform capabilities to deliver the intelligence layer of the enterprise. We serve every part of Coles — from computer vision applications that enhance in-store experiences and reduce loss, to forecasting, optimisation, and decision-support solutions that drive efficiency, accuracy, and agility across our supply chain, retail operations, and corporate functions.

About the role

 

As a Governance Analyst for our Data and Artificial Intelligence team, your primary function will be to Support the implementation and continuous improvement of governance frameworks across Data and AI/ML platforms to ensure ethical, responsible, and compliant use of Data and AI/ML technologies.

 

You will assist in operationalising governance controls across the data and AI/ML model lifecycle including data sourcing, model training, deployment, monitoring, and decommissioning and your key responsibilities will include:

 

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of governance documentation, including policies, procedures, data standards, metadata strategies, and governance metrics.
  • Monitor AI/ML models for compliance with regulatory, ethical, and risk standards, including explainability, fairness, transparency, and data privacy.
  • Collaborate with platform, data engineering, legal, risk, and compliance teams to ensure alignment with enterprise governance policies.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of metadata management, data lineage, and audit logging tools.
  • Track and report on governance KPIs related to data quality, model risk, access control, and policy adherence.
  • Conduct audits and regular reviews across data management across all our platforms - SQL knowledge would b essential.
  • Promote governance awareness and contribute to a culture of responsible AI across the organization.
  • Collaborate with Privacy/ Marketing Compliance and legal teams to ensure data activation aligns with consent, DNC, Spam Act & Australian Privacy Principles
  • Collaborate with platform and engineering teams to define and maintain source-to-platform data dictionaries, lineage documentation, and data usage guidelines.
  • Support data QA activities, anomaly detection, and platform audit processes.
  • Implement the principles of data lifecycle management through the customer data tech stack

 

About You and Your Skills

 

  • 3+ years of experience in data governance, risk, compliance, or information management roles.
  • Exposure to AI/ML lifecycle governance or model risk management in enterprise environments.
  • Experience with metadata management tools and data catalog (e.g., Collibra, Alation, Informatica).
  • Familiarity with data privacy and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, AI Act).
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and supporting change management initiatives
  • Strong understanding of data governance principles and responsible AI practices.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail and ability to interpret governance metrics.
  • Effective communication skills to translate governance concepts into actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML platform components (e.g., model registries, feature stores) is a plus.
  • Ability to work across hybrid cloud environments (e.g., Azure, Databricks, Snowflake).

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
  • Certifications in data governance (e.g., DCAM, CDMP) or AI ethics are desirable. Certifications (optional but advantageous):
  • Data governance certifications (e.g. Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), DAMA certifications)
  • Privacy and compliance certifications (e.g. IAPP CIPP/A)
  • Tools or platform-specific certifications (if available for key platforms such as Snowflake or AmperityCDP)
