About the team

 

Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. As a part of the Technology team, you get the opportunity to work through complex, challenging, meaningful problems using large data sets and new technologies to expand your skills and experience.

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager – Linux Server Platforms to lead the design, build and operation of Coles’ enterprise Linux Server environment.


You will have end-to-end accountability for the Linux platform, with a strong focus on using the Ansible Automation Platform to standardise server deployment, configuration and operational management.


This role will lead the evolution of Coles’ Linux capabilities, improving platform security, reliability and scalability while reducing manual effort and configuration variation through automation.

 


What you’ll be doing


You will lead teams responsible for the design, engineering, delivery and operation of enterprise Linux Server platforms, with end-to-end ownership of Linux services across datacentre and edge environments. 


You will define and execute the Linux platform strategy, roadmap, engineering standards and reference patterns, while leading the adoption and ongoing development of the Ansible Automation Platform. 


A key focus will be driving automated server provisioning, patching, configuration management and lifecycle processes, by reducing manual processes, configuration drift and technical debt while ensuring Linux Server platforms are secure, resilient, scalable and aligned with enterprise architecture standards.


You will ensure Linux platforms are secure, reliable, resilient, scalable and cost-effective, overseeing availability, performance, capacity, monitoring and observability. You will also lead incident, problem and change-management practices, work closely with architecture, cyber security, application, database, delivery and operational-support teams, manage platform budgets, risks, vendors and managed-service-provider performance, and build team capability through coaching, mentoring and career development.


Ansible automation platform experience is a highly regarded.

 

About you and your skills


You will bring strong experience leading Linux engineering or infrastructure teams in complex enterprise environments, with expertise in enterprise Linux platforms and the Ansible Automation Platform. 


You will also have a strong understanding of Linux security, reliability and service management, together with proven stakeholder, vendor and people leadership capability.


•    5+ years experience leading infrastructure, platform, or operations teams in complex enterprise environments
•    Proven experience in infrastructure design, implementation, and lifecycle management
•    Experience managing hybrid environments (on-premise datacentre and edge clouds as well as public cloud platforms)
•    Experience working across platform-aligned teams (e.g. compute, storage, network, edge)
•    Experience leading both design-focused and build/run teams
•    Strong background in infrastructure operations, including incident, problem, and change management
•    Experience managing outsourced operations and vendor delivery models
•    Experience delivering large-scale infrastructure or platform transformation initiatives
•    Demonstrated ability to drive automation and standardisation across infrastructure environments
•    Demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams and drive continuous improvement
•    Relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Engineering and related discipline
•    Strong financial management capability
•    Risk management and governance experience
•    Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
•    Understanding of enterprise infrastructure trends, tooling, and service models
