About the role
As an Engineering Manager, you play an important role as a technology leader across multiple product squads. Each squad includes both web and mobile app engineering capability and is organised around a single product manager and shared objective. You provide leadership, coaching, support, and act as an enabler to these squads, helping them balance technology, delivery, and outcomes in alignment with the wider group’s objectives. In addition to delivering and executing the product roadmap, you are also accountable for running and maintaining what has been built once delivered to production.
Work Experience
- At least 3 years’ experience leading highly skilled engineering teams and delivering large, complex programs of work.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in product development, with a strong track record of delivering end-to-end outcomes; experience in web and/or native mobile app development is highly regarded.
- Deep experience building and coaching high-performance teams, with proven success applying agile methodologies and driving continuous improvement.
- Experience working within complex system architectures, and overseeing operations, scaling, and support structures.
- Proven ability to deliver outcomes as part of a cross-functional group, coordinating across multiple teams and stakeholders, including onshore/offshore delivery models and external vendors/integrators.
Key Responsibilities
People Leadership
- Line managing engineers across squads.
- Coaching individuals and teams towards desired behaviours, shared values, and high performance through regular feedback and guidance.
- Building and hiring high-quality teams in line with Coles’ engineering hiring practices.
- Handling conflict constructively and promoting accountability and trust.
- Coaching, mentoring, and supporting technical leaders and peers to build leadership capability across the group.
Technology product ownership
- Translating clear business requirements into actionable work items for squads.
- Planning, creating, and executing delivery roadmaps based on actual business needs, and communicating these plans to squads and stakeholders.
- Implementing and driving systems of work, including agile ceremonies and delivery practices.
- Coordinating dependencies, sequencing epics and stories, and ensuring consistent delivery of value in small increments.
- Owning quality and embedding practices that minimise defects and rework.
- Supporting squads in becoming increasingly autonomous in their delivery practices
- Capturing and managing risks, assumptions, and decisions effectively
- Driving initiatives and contributing to the product roadmap and strategy for the products and assets under your squads’ responsibility.
Technology product engineering
- Ensuring Coles’ engineering standards are consistently met and maintained.
- Promoting agile engineering practices across squads.
- Driving quality in delivery, ensuring products meet both functional and cross-functional requirements (e.g. security, scalability, resilience).
- Encouraging simple, clean, and evolutionary architecture that supports long-term sustainability.
- Providing pragmatic engineering guidance, fostering collaboration, and helping teams align on approaches.
- Driving initiatives and contributing to the technology and engineering roadmap and strategy for the squads’ products and assets.
Technology product operation
- Owning the principle of “you build it, you run it” across your squads.
- Leading support and management of incidents and escalations.
- Defining, implementing, and monitoring SLAs for all components and services.
- Driving quick, collaborative resolution of incidents to minimise business impact.
- Investigating and identifying root causes of incidents, and ensuring improvements and fixes are implemented to prevent recurrence.
