Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. About the role

 

The Engineering Lead guides team of engineers in designing, building and delivering high-quality software solutions. The role blends hands-on technical expertise with leadership, mentoring, and strategic thinking. The Lead ensures engineering excellence, drives best practices, and collaborates closely with product, design, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful outcomes.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

 

People Leadership

 

  • Responsible for leading a small group of team members in the engineering centre of enablement, providing specialist skills, knowledge and advice on Coles’ technology platforms and supporting software
  • Provide leadership and manage team members performance, development, training, and career pathways, ensuring culturally aligned organisational behaviours and continuous improvement is embedded to optimise organisational outcomes
  • Coach the team towards the desired behaviours, shared values, and high performance (as individuals and as a team)
  • Provide feedback & guidance and promote a culture of collaboration, inclusiveness, openness, and safety

 

 

Engineering Enablement & Delivery

 

  • Support and enable as necessary the design, planning, implementation, and release of relevant engineering enablement capabilities across the projects, programs, and agile squads
  • Work collaboratively with architecture and product teams to define and own the engineering strategy and roadmap for the assigned platform
  • Provide strategic direction by implementing best practices, processes and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support and contribute to the definition of engineering standards and promote their adoption
  • Support enablement of engineering through early engagement with projects and programs
  • Support and guidance around alignment of capabilities and practices with quality objectives
  • Attend and participate in the Engineering community of practice
  • Peer review estimates and solution architecture/design with Architecture to ensure alignment to the group standards
  • Ensuring governance, compliance, data quality, metrics, completeness, and accuracy of metadata, are integral to the capability
  • Defining, baselining and operationalisation of key quality metrics
  • Deliver software projects, ensuring timelines and high quality
  • Identify risks, remove blockers and ensure smooth execution
  • Align engineering efforts with business goals and customer needs

 

 

 

Skills & Experience

 

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in a leadership or senior technical role
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages (e.g. Java, C#, Python, JavaScript, API etc.)
  • Experience with cloud platforms i.e. Azure, AWS
  • Deep understanding of system design, distributed systems, and scalable architectures
  • Familiarity with Azure Pipelines, containerization
  • Strong debugging, performance turning and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to balance technical depth with strategic thinking
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability
