As a result of the growth across the business at Coles we are looking for a Category Manager for Packaging and Consumables.  You will be responsible for procuring packaging that is used in store by customers across Deli, Fresh Produce and Bakery, the CM actively supports the ‘together to zero’ mission to drive generational sustainability


What you’ll be doing

Reporting to a Senior Category Manager you will be responsible for collaboratively working with stakeholders and suppliers to deliver more sustainable packaging alternatives through strategic sourcing, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) and value engineering. 


You’ll also be responsible for:


  • Sourcing of packaging and consumables in consideration of strategic and functional requirements, budgets and TCO
  • Building and managing the pipeline of upcoming initiatives based upon contract expirations, strategic imperatives and market opportunities – focussing upon value engineering opportunities to move to sustainable alternatives at competitive and rational pricing
  • Development of concise and clear templated Overview packs for endorsement at relevant Executive forums
  • SRM and Performance management of the 3PL and Consumables partner and other key suppliers
  • Supporting primary stakeholders across all areas of Coles Group as relates to the category including:
    • Establishing the category vision
    • Setting and communicating the strategic direction; and
    • Identifying synergies across the pipeline of initiatives to deliver additional value.
    • Working at pace to provide guidance and consulting support for low value Proof of Concept and trialling initiatives
  • Administration and updating of the low value process which allows business stakeholders to test and trial alternative packaging and consumables with suppliers

Achieving or exceeding annual efficiency and value targets set against category plans achieved through commercial dealings with suppliers and internal customers 


Good things you’ll need


We’re after someone with proven experience in Category Management, with strong end to end category management knowledge and highly developed commercial experience, possibly gained in other large commercial/FMCG/Retail enterprise.


You’ll need:

  • Related tertiary qualification, ideally with commerce, supply chain management, law, information technology or digital areas
  • Strong business acumen and negotiation skills gained in major projects and contract negotiations.
  • Skills in the development of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) models that, where applicable incorporate all cost dimensions and risk analysis elements.
  • Proven capability in developing and executing value engineering initiatives in Packaging and Consumables
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian contract law as it relates to the purchase and supply or goods and services.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to move quickly between initiatives.
  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Excellent self-management practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Competent in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project and e-procurement tools/systems.
