Diversity and Inclusion

We’re all different. At Coles, we see that as a good thing. Because we know that our differences – our backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives – set us apart. And they can also bring us together.

Our differences help us spark ideas, create connections and discover commonality. Helping us foster understanding, show empathy and build communities. Being unique reminds us that every customer, team member and supplier we work with is unique too. It inspires us to win together to achieve our goal of sustainably feeding all Australians. Just as we have for over a century, we’re making Coles somewhere everyone feels like they belong. So that we can all live healthier and happier lives.

As part of our Better Together inclusion program, we’ve committed to a number of diversity and inclusion initiatives to be achieved by 2023. The program includes five key pillars – Belonging, Gender Equity, Accessibility, Pride (LGBTQI+), and Indigenous Engagement. Each pillar has ambitious goals that are supported at the executive and board levels and worked towards by all team members.

A commitment to best-practice inclusion

Our awards and memberships recognise our commitment to best-practice inclusion. We’re a signatory to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), an Australian Network on Disability (AND) Gold member, we’re a member of the Diversity Council of Australia and we support Inclusive Australia – a social movement rooted in behaviour-change science. We strive for best practice through regular external benchmarking and are currently ranked 8th in the Access and Inclusion Index and we hold bronze employer status in the 2020 Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI).

Gender Equity

We’re striving for gender balance and have a goal of 40% representation of women in leadership positions by 2023. We’re already in balance across Coles Group, including at Board level and in our senior leadership group. We’ve worked hard to mainstream flexible working (now more than ever). We’re updating our recruitment processes, looking at how we develop talent and challenging role structures to create a working environment that helps team members thrive.

We’re proud to be one of Australia’s largest private sector employers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and we’re not stopping there. We’re continuing to provide more leadership and training opportunities to develop successful careers pathways for our Indigenous team members.

Accessibility is important to us, not just across our stores but all our workplaces and digital platforms. Leaders across our Supermarkets, Liquor and Coles Express complete Disability Confidence Training—and it’s part of our induction program—to make sure we’re offering great service and support to all our team members and customers. We have a gold membership with the Australian Network on Disability, and regularly benchmark our progress against the Access and Inclusion Index, to make sure we keep improving.

Pride (LGBTQI+)

No matter your sexual orientation or how you identify, you can be your authentic self when you work with us. Our executive-sponsored team member network, and our commitment to continually striving for best practice in the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), means you can come to Coles Group knowing you’ll grow your career, thrive and reach your full potential.

Support for transgender and gender diverse applicants throughout the recruitment process

We welcome applications from the LGBTQI+ community and we recognise that trans and gender diverse applicants may have specific questions throughout the recruitment process. There’s no obligation to disclose your gender identity, however if you choose to share this information, we are here to provide advice and support. Our ‘Pride in Diversity LGBTQI+ awareness’ trained Inclusive Recruitment team as well as our Diversity & Inclusion Manager, can work with relevant stakeholders and partners to assist you in navigating the process.

Applicants can contact our Inclusive Recruitment team at inclusionrecruitment@coles.com.au – where you’ll be supported by our Inclusive Recruitment LGBTQI+ lead.

We’re committed to fostering an open and welcoming culture where every team member feels valued. We do this by creating diverse teams, with inclusive leaders, and by driving a truly flexible working culture. Flexible working improves team members’ wellbeing and job satisfaction, it enables business continuity and ultimately leads to better customer outcomes. Our team members can request to work in ways that suit them and their role, and know they will be supported in their request. Let’s have a conversation about how flexibility can work for you.

Our team members tell us it’s the people they get to work with, our shared purpose and the sense of community at Coles Group that makes it such a special place to work.
