At Coles, we start with diversity and we thrive with inclusion. We’re obsessed with building a workplace where everyone is included, feels connected and can belong – and where our team are healthy, happy and can be their authentic selves.

Diversity creates a vibrant workplace, better performing teams and ultimately leads to better customer experiences. But we also know diversity without inclusion is a story of missed opportunities. We’re committed to creating a safe and supportive work environment for all team members regardless of age, disability, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity or background. Our team members are at their best when they’re collaborating with different people in a workplace that’s open, fair, curious and accountable.

As part of our Better Together inclusion program, we’ve committed to a number of diversity and inclusion initiatives to be achieved by 2023. The program includes five key pillars – Gender Balance, Indigenous, Accessibility, Pride (LGBTI) and Flexibility. Each pillar has ambitious goals that are supported at the executive and board levels and worked towards by all team members.

A commitment to best-practice inclusion

Our awards and memberships recognise our commitment to best-practice inclusion. We’re a signatory to the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), an Australian Network on Disability (AND) Gold member, we’re a member of the Diversity Council of Australia and we support Inclusive Australia – a social movement rooted in behaviour-change science. We strive for best practice through regular external benchmarking and are currently ranked 8th in the Access and Inclusion Index and we hold bronze employer status in the 2020 Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI).

Gender Balance

We’re striving for gender balance and have a goal of 40% representation of women in leadership positions by 2023. We’re already in balance across Coles Group, including at Board level and in our senior leadership group. We’ve worked hard to mainstream flexible working (now more than ever). We’re updating our recruitment processes, looking at how we develop talent and challenging role structures to create a working environment that helps team members thrive.


We’re proud to be one of Australia’s largest private sector employers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and we’re not stopping there. We’re continuing to provide more leadership and training opportunities to develop successful careers pathways for our Indigenous team members.

Leaders across our Supermarkets, Liquor and Coles Express complete Disability Confidence Training—and it’s part of our induction program—to make sure we’re offering great service and support to all our team members and customers. We have a gold membership with the Australian Network on Disability, and regularly benchmark our progress against the Access and Inclusion Index, to make sure we keep improving.
